As a first time GoPro buyer, it can be challenging to translate the tech specs to how they affect practical day-to-day use.  GoPro HERO5 Black and HERO5 Session are very remarkable action cams that pack a big punch.

Many people are drawn to the smaller, less conspicuous Session.   Before putting money down for one of the latest GoPro cameras you may want to make sure you understand what you’re getting into.  In other words, which camera best serves you.

According to GoPro enthusiasts, customers who purchase the Session camera will eventually regret not having the touchscreen because you will constantly have your phone in one hand and the camera in the other.

Keeping in mind, the low light performance has been improved greatly in the HERO5 lineup.  GoPro has been clear about the minimal differences between the Black and the Session.

I have four HERO4 Silvers along with a Black, and a Session.  Whenever I use the Session as my “set it and forget it” camera, it really pairs well with the HERO cams, which is usually B-Roll filming in 1080p at 30fps.

HERO5 Black comes with GPS enabled and the Session doesn’t (although at the moment GPS only location tags the video/photo so not as big of a deal).

Personally I shoot at 2.7K 60fps which the Session doesn’t have.  Session doesn’t have HDMI out. Of course, I’ve never used that, but I know a lot of my friends like the Session. It is way smaller. Still, I much prefer the HERO5 Black because it has better resolution and more modes, also I like to change the battery.

When comparing the footage from the two cameras side by side, there really isn’t much difference with image quality and low light.  In conclusion, if you are ready to spend an extra $100 go with HERO5 Black.
