Hardcore Henry is a first person action film in which the audience sees everything through the eyes of Henry, a man resurrected from the brink of death as a cybernetic super soldier who remembers nothing about his past.

He is trying to save his wife Estelle, who has been kidnapped by Akan, a powerful warlord with a plan for bio-engineering soldiers. In the unfamiliar city of Moscow, Henry tries to avoid being killed while discovering the truth behind his identity.

Hardcore Henry was shot almost entirely on the GoPro Hero 3 camera, using a specially-built rig worn like a mask.  The concept for the film came from the short videos “The Stampede” and “Bad Motherfucker” which according to the director, Ilya Naishuller, were also shot on a GoPro from the first person perspective.

Ultimately, the camera angles place the audience in the driver’s seat, and allows them to experience the mayhem first-hand, as if he or she were actually Henry. It’s an extremely unique approach that not only puts a spin on tired old rescue missions of action movies past, but also breathes new life into the first person POV sub-genre that up until this moment had started to become very dried out and un-original.

The film brings in several big names in Sci-fi and action genres including Sharlto Copley who starred in District 9.  Hardcore Henry will be the first action movie to be shot from a first-person point of view according to Naishuller and Copley. In 2009 Copley won the Favorite Hero award at the IGN Summer Movie awards and Best Performance of 2009 for his role in District 9.  Copley is currently working on Free Fire which is an upcoming British crime-drama film directed by Ben Wheatley.

“I don’t call it a gimmick at all because you’re talking about something that is reflective of a whole new generation.  You know.. first person shooter, POV, the GoPro camera.  This is not gimmick world and this is something that is going to have an impact”  – Sharlto Copley

The film premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2015. The film became one of the highest-profile at the festival, and led to a bidding war between Lionsgate, Universal, and STX Entertainment. Triumphantly, STX acquired worldwide rights to the movie formerly titled ‘Hardcore’, including a wide release commitment, for $10 million, becoming the studio’s first festival acquisition. It was retitled Hardcore Henry for its domestic release. At the festival, the film won the Grolsch People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award. The film is scheduled to be released on April 8, 2016, by STX Entertainment.

Here’s some advice – strap in because Hardcore Henry is one of the most unflinchingly original wild-rides to hit the big screen in a long time.  Seen through the eyes of Henry himself: You remember nothing. Mainly because you’ve just been brought back from the dead by your wife (Haley Bennett). She tells you that your name is Henry. Five minutes later, you are being shot at, your wife has been kidnapped, and you should probably go get her back.

Who’s got her? His name’s Akan (Danila Kozlovsky); he’s a powerful warlord with an army of mercenaries, and a plan for world domination. You’re also in an unfamiliar city of Moscow, and everyone wants you dead. Everyone except for a mysterious British fellow called Jimmy (Sharlto Copley). He may be on your side, but you aren’t sure. If you can survive the insanity, and solve the mystery, you might just discover your purpose and the truth behind your identity. Good luck, Henry. You’re likely going to need it
