Captured and shown on JYP’s YouTube channel, the brilliant northern lights are vastly seen in Kuusamo, Finland.

An awesome time lapse of the northern lights was captured on GoPro Hero camera.  The creator of the film did not specify the methods being used to successfully record the moment, but the video is stunning and deserves commendations.

According to many time lapse video makers, it is absolutely crucial that you have a reliable tripod that you know you’ll be able to operate in the cold. Without your tripod, your camera will be useless at capturing the aurora because it always requires a long exposure, even during strong storms.

The main culprit to messing up your capture of the northern lights is Light Pollution (natural or man-made).  You want the sky to be as dark as it can be so the colors contrast against the sky as much as possible. That means you’re best off getting out of the city and once you’re out, you should face away from any nearby cities.

To get the best out of the GoPro camera, set exposure and test the various exposure time.  According to Abe Kislevitz,

Night Lapse mode allows you to set two things: exposure time and interval time (time between shots).

5 Seconds
5 seconds will work for most things that 2 seconds does well; however, you can utilize a lower ISO setting to get cleaner and darker footage. This is great for darker city shots, more rural roads, fireworks, light painting, thunderstorms, camping.

30 Seconds
If you’re in a dark area and want to capture stars, 30 seconds is the way to go. This is also great for dark light painting where you want to have the most amount of time to draw your shapes.
