Chief designer Ben Bowlby was given the brief from Nissan to not design an “Audi copy”.  Nissan recently unveiled its ultimate hybrid GT-R LM NISMO that will spearhead LMP1 at Le Mans, where it will take on the hybrid likes of Audi, Porsche, and Toyota.  With innovative technologies, the GT-R LM NISMO features a front-wheel-driven chassis powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 that works in harmony with an electric drive system said to push more than 1,250 horsepower.

Amazingly, the GT-R LM NISMO transforms the kinetic energy generated and saves it until it can be accessed again instantly.  Think of exiting the same corner where the braking initially generated the energy – the machine learns from its previous run. The wheel/tire package up front is wider than the rear, so the power from front-mounted engine can be immediately and efficiently transferred to the ground.

Bowlby placed the GT-R LM’s combustion engine in front of the cockpit, a layout that has not been used in prototypes since the Panoz LMP01 Evo in 2003. Unlike the Panoz’s rear-wheel drive powertrain, the GT-R LM powers the front axle through a gearbox located in front of the engine. The engine, co-developed by Nissan and Cosworth, is a 3.0 L (180 cu in) 60-degree V6 with dual turbochargers and direct injection, and is seen by Nissan as the most fuel efficient design.
