Pukin Dogs is a gnarly alias that belongs to the Strike Fighter Squadron 143 (VFA-143) based at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia. The Pukin Dogs are an operational fleet squadron and flying the F/A-18 Super Hornet. The Super Hornet is a combat-proven strike fighter with built-in versatility. The Super Hornet’s suite of integrated and networked systems provides enhanced interoperability, total force support for the combatant commander and for the troops on the ground.
The Super Hornet’s versatility applies to its weapon stations and payload types:
– 11 weapon stations
– Supports a full complement of smart weapons, including laser-guided bombs
– Carries a full spectrum mix of air-to-air and air-to-ground ordnance
Captured on GoPro cam, the F/A-18 swoops down to low-altitudes over various arid landscapes, the Colombia River Gorge, and glaciers of the Pacific Northwest.
Known by many student and instructor pilots, the criteria of flying such a rig is extremely stringent. A good start would require upwards of 500 hours in their legacy aircraft, superior piloting skills, two years of fleet squadron experience, and demonstrated apt performance. Some can even go as far as saying only the precious few have what it takes.
