Some of us may recall in 2012, Apple Inc. filed for the patent including patents acquired from Kodak that contained rights to some intellectual property.  The news was not hard-hitting when the filing happened, by now it sure sounds like a war cry.

According to the application filed with the U.S. Patents and Trademark Office, the patent notably calls out GoPro cameras and its weaknesses.  Specifically, there are intricate details about a camera system that can be mounted on bike helmets or scuba masks.  In a very deliberate way, Apple is looking to mobilize into the action camera community.

In the second decade of the 21st century, Apple’s multinational litigation over technology patents became known as part of the mobile device “smartphone patent wars”.

On May 2, 2014, it was ruled in United States court that Samsung was responsible to pay $119.6 million USD to Apple for smartphone patent violations.  The jury found that Samsung had infringed upon two Apple patents.  According to a professor at the Santa Clara University law school, the amount payable to Apple is less than 10% of the amount requested.  Apple went on by releasing an official response depicting that “Samsung willfully stole”.

Presently, one patent belonging to Apple gives way for a new camera system enabling iPhones to be waterproof, thus having the ability to go under water to take photos and record resonances in surrounding waters.

Investors became extremely weary after hearing about the Apple patents. GoPro stock prices took a dive to 13%, breathing around $49.87 on Tuesday January 13, 2015. According to Charlie Anderson, Analyst at Dougherty & Co., Apple receives thousands of patents each year, most of which never lead to products.

There has been no real response from GoPro yet.  But knowing about a new contender stepping up should not phase GoPro at all.  Recently, many action cameras are made to target GoPro as the one to be beaten.  Some may go as far as thinking that it is pure flattery.  Action enthusiasts already learned a long time ago that the feeling you get from being a HERO is insurmountable.
